Poetry can create strong bonds that connect people. Each person has both common and unique aspects of their life. Most everyone can relate with love: family love, romantic
love, and love between strong friendships. Many popular songs through the years have been songs about failed love and longing for love. Here are a few examples of poetry that can be written by one person and meaningful for another person:

Nathan’s Wish Come True
By Linda DeGree
“If I don’t get a family of my own, I go kill myself.”
This was a statement made by my adopted son
who was born in another country.
My husband and I adopted at age 6 1/2 .
He was gardening with my mother-in-law.
She was a bit horrified.
“Don’t say that, Nathan,
Life is precious. God created you for a reason..”
“Not if I not have a family.”
My mother-in-law thought,
Then, I reflected, "I guess you felt like a weed.
Strong, hardy, but wrong for the row.”
Yes. I was a weed.
I not belong to no one.
Now I am in the right row.
I have a family.
I strong. I belong.
I want to live now.
"That’s good, Nathan,
Because now you are my grandson
and I am proud to be your grandmother.
I love you. I hope you love me, too."
Then there are reaction poems where people long to be seen as they wish to be seen instead of other people's preconceived ideas of them. This can be seen from the purpose of the following two poems:
Don't Call Me Cute and Sweet and Innocent
Don’t call me Cute and Sweet and Innocent.
Those are meaningless words.
Instead, if you must comment on my appearance,
Call me—Attractive?
Instead of calling me sweet, call me thoughtful.
And Don’t,
DON’T
DON'T call me innocent,
Because what you see as innocence
I call the gift—
Of appreciating my life
as it is.
Poems are ways of expressing oneself and connecting with other people who can relate your words to aspects in their own lives.
